How to Stop Credit Card Solicitations

As part of our ongoing commitment to making your life easier, this quarter's tip offers sound advice for banishing unwanted credit card and insurance solicitations from your mailbox.

To reduce these solicitations, visit www.OptOutPrescreen.com. OptOutPrescreen is the official Consumer Credit Reporting Industry website that processes requests to opt-in or opt-out for pre-approved credit or insurance offers. If you opt-out, your name will be removed from lists supplied by Equifax, Experian, Innovis, and TransUnion to credit and insurance companies. Online registration is valid for five years. You may permanently opt-out from these offers by initiating the process online and printing and signing the online registration form and mailing it in. Just follow the instructions.

To opt out by phone, call 1.888.567.8688. Choose either five year or permanent opt-out status. For permanent opt-out, you’ll receive a form in the mail. Remember to sign and mail it back within five days.

You need not provide your Social Security number or date of birth for online or phone registration, although the site claims that doing so will help ensure your request can be successfully processed. Opting-out does not affect your ability to apply for or obtain credit, nor does it affect your credit score.
